How to Winterize Your Outdoor Kitchen in Colorado
A step-by-step Fort Collins winterization checklist to keep plumbing, appliances, and stonework safe through the cold months.
When to Winterize in Fort Collins
Mid-October is the right time to winterize a Fort Collins outdoor kitchen. The first hard freeze typically hits between Oct 15 and Nov 1, and one missed shut-off can mean a $5,000 plumbing repair.
Step 1: Shut Off & Drain Water Lines
Close the main water valve to your outdoor kitchen, then open every faucet, sprayer, and ice-maker line. Use compressed air to blow remaining water out — Fort Collins's freeze depth is 30 inches and any trapped water will rupture pipes.
Step 2: Disconnect Refrigeration
Empty and unplug outdoor refrigerators, kegerators, and ice makers. Leave doors propped open to prevent mildew.
Step 3: Protect the Grill
Deep-clean grates, burn off residue, and cover with a heavy-duty fitted cover. Shut off the gas line at the source.
Step 4: Seal Stonework
Apply a penetrating sealer to natural stone and grout before the first freeze. Sealed stone shrugs off the freeze-thaw cycle; unsealed stone spalls in 2–3 seasons.
Step 5: Cover Countertops & Appliances
Use breathable covers — not plastic — to prevent moisture trapping that damages stainless steel.
Spring Reopening
Reverse every step in April. Pressure-test water lines for 24 hours before regular use to catch any freeze damage early.
